03 - Migrate data from your Server/DC instance

There are multiple options when it comes to the Data migration from Jira Data Center into Jira Cloud.

As mentioned before, Elements Connect is not yet compatible with Jira Cloud Migration Assistant (JCMA); therefore, a manual interaction to prepare data for migration will be always needed and this is what we have covered in the previous step “Prepare Connect fields on Server/DC for migration“.

Once your data is prepared for migration, the next step is to select the migration method that best aligns with your needs to transfer this data into your Cloud instance. This choice is influenced by several factors, including the size and complexity of your instance, the number of work items to be migrated, the level of customization, and your specific business requirements.

Jira Cloud Migration Assistant (JCMA)

This is the solution recommended by Atlassian for Cloud migration. Following this method, you’ll be able to migrate your Connect field data (prepared in Jira text fields) in one shot to the Cloud.

This is suitable for mid-large instances with high number of work items.

Steps:

  1. Migrate instance with JCMA

  2. Populate the migrated fields into the created Connected custom fields in the Cloud by following the next step “How to copy migrated values into Connected fields”.

CSV export/import

This solution enables you to export your work items with Connect fields data that was prepared for migration in the previous step “Prepare Connect fields on Server/DC for migration”. You can then import this CSV file into the Cloud.

It's essential to note that the performance of this option may be affected by the number of work items being migrated, as it is best suited for smaller instances.

Steps

  1. Export your work items into a CSV file (the file should contains the data prepared for migration in this step “Prepare Connect fields on Server/DC for migration“).

  2. Import the file into your Cloud instance

  3. Populate the migrated fields into the created Connected custom fields in the Cloud by following the next step “How to copy migrated values into Connected fields”.
